The answer is D: empty and hopeless.
Endgame is a play by Samuel Beckett in which he presents us four of his most famous characters: Hamm, who is unable to stand; Clov, his servant; and Nell and Nagg, Hamm´s parents. The play takes place inside a single room, where Hamm often instructs Clov to look outside and check if anything has come about or if any significant events have occurred. None ever happen, and Beckett often insinuates that there is nothing outside, nothing but despair and hopelessness (which is not much different to what is there in the room).
