The problems faced were the problem of malaria, which many died from. They also had shortages of food. These could be resolved by staying clean.
in Jamestown the first permanent settlement there was a shortage of
food because the main crop was tobacco and the death rate was extremely
high. it was considered a miracle to live to 50 because of the
infections such as malaria, typhoid fever, etc. Also the male to female
ratio was 3 to 2 so population was not rising quick.
