Constantly living in fear due to the explosions all around him, the thought of being killed so easily while at war. He had to watch all of his friends and fellow soldiers around him be blown up and killed or severely injured. The diary entry also suggests that he was starving because he risked his life to get to the kitchen to eat a meal.
Corporal Sherwood faced many hardships. The Diary Entry describes brutal explosions and Sherwood's fears of living. Sherwood risks his life to feed himself. The diary tells how they must carry on without their dead soldiers and be strong. The diary hints at how the soldiers must live at risk at all times on the battlefields and their continuous fear of any moment of dying. It also hints that he is starving because he risks his life to eat.
