Sanford B. Dole played an important role in the history of Hawaii. Dole was one of the lawyers of American descent who participated in the drafting of the "Bayonet Constitution," or the 1887 Constitution of the Kingdom of Hawaii, which was responsible for consolidating power among the elites in the islands. Moreover, he was also appointed to the Supreme Court of Hawaii, and the Privy Council.
After the end of the monarchy, Dole was named president of the Provisional Government of Hawaii. He was afterwards named the president of the Republic, and he was largely responsible for lobbying for the annexation of the Republic of Hawaii into the United States.
