About 5.5 million Italians immigrated to the United States from 1820 to 2004. Approximately 84% of these immigrants came from the Kingdom of Naples or the Kingdom of Sicily (the "Two Sicilies"). This was the poorest and most rural part of Italy.
Most Italian communities were established in industrial centers such as Baltimore, New York City, New Jersey, Boston, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Buffalo. In later years, Newy York Harbor and Baltimore became the preferred areas. In contrast, Southern states have very few Italian-American residents.
