3. To make us wish that we were in his place
Explanation:
To the narrator and everyone else, Richard Cory is the epitome of what a good life is like. And everyone seems to envy him. Not knowing what he must be feeling deep inside and whether he is lonely or sad, they overlooked everything for his money and thought he is living the life. But then we saw in the end that he killed himself with a bullet through the head. So, even while it seems that Cory's life is all green, it isn't so. The grass is always never greener on the other side. Everyone has their own issues and problems that no one sees. Dis-satisfactions and the want to be able to live life like someone will always be a part of human nature.
