Since 1809 the US was, through deals and purchases, trying to expand its own territory; having a lot of success, for example, with the acquisition of Louisiana and Florida. With Mexico it was a little different, they declined many of the substantial offers the US made to them on several occasions.  Not much later, in 1846, President James Polk sent troops to the disputed area, which started the confrontations between the two countries and on March 13 of 1846 President Polk officially declared war on Mexico.

The Mormons had a very difficult trip, they were attacked repeatedly by mobs, they barely had any food and almost no money at all. People would stop them from staying at many places during their journey, sometimes even the government would get involved in taking them out. A lot of them were actually killed during this journey.

Manifest destiny is a concept that is best described as an attitude. It was basically a nationalist attitude even impregnated with feelings of superiority. It was something the pioneers believed during the 1800s. It empowered their expansionist views and it was religious at its core, backing the belief that God had a plan for America to have the pioneers expand across the continent.
