I think the answers would be 1 "we were rapidly descending the glacier" (Paragraph 3) and 4. "we were trapped on an island of ice" (Paragraph 4), because it shows us how difficult and how bad the situation was. Difficult being, rapidly going down a glacier and Bad being stuck on an island of ice, not knowing what to do next. :)
