Dysthymia is different from major depression because it is a chronic form of depression that’s less severe than MDD, but lasts for years. It can significantly impact your: relationships,
family life, social life, physical health, daily activities. However, Depression known as major depressive disorder (MDD), is a common medical illness that negatively impacts the way you think, feel, and act. This may lead to emotional and physical problems that can interfere with your ability to function at home and work.They are the same thought because they both effect your life pretty drastically.

People with MDD have a normal mood baseline when they’re not experiencing depression.
People with PDD experience depression all the time and don’t remember — or know — what it feels like not to be depressed.

Major depression and dysthymia depression are similar in certain ways, however, there are some key differences.

Major depression and dysthymia:

Depending upon the time one may feel a lack of energy and hopelessness, one may have dysthymia or major depressive disorder. Dysthymia generally known as persistent depressive disorder comprises lesser symptoms, however, they last longer, that is, for about two years.

On the other hand, one can be diagnosed with major depressive disorder if one is exhibiting symptoms for two weeks. Both are mood disorders.

Depressed mood is the one symptom, which is common in both kinds of depression. Some of the symptoms shown in both depression forms are:

  • Problems sleeping
  • Loss of appetite
  • Low self-esteem
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Difficulty in making decisions

One can be diagnosed with dysthymia if one is exhibiting at least two of the above symptoms along with depressed mood, however, the symptoms will last for two years.

On the other hand, in major depressive disorder, the person would be experiencing the majority of the symptoms mentioned, which would last for at least two weeks.

Thus, both major depression and dysthymia are similar in some ways, however, having some essential differences.
