Passage of the Indian Removal Act:
This gave the president the power to grant unsettled lands to tribes in exchange for their lands within the borders of established states.
- The law authorizes the President to negotiate with Native American tribes for their land displacement (or removal).
Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek signed:
The Choctaw tribe agreed to give up all land east of the Mississippi River and move to Indian Territory.
- This was the first formal treaty under the Indian Removal Act.
Worcester v. Georgia:
Native American tribes are similar to foreign nations; only the national government has the right to deal with foreign nations.
- The court found that the Georgia legislature lacked the authority to impose regulations on Native land.
