The grains from smallest to the largest are as follows-
(1) Clay (Diameter, D< 0.004 mm in diameter)
(2) Silt (D= 0.004 to 0.0625 mm)
(3) Sand (D= 0.0625-2 mm)
(4) Gravel (D= 2-4 mm)
(5) Pebble (D= 4-256 mm)
(6) Cobble (D= 64-256 mm)
(7) Boulder (D> 256 mm)
These sediments are weathered from the source rock and are transported from the source area to a different place and then they are compacted and lithified as a result of which detrital (clastic) sedimentary rocks are formed. For example, sandstone, siltstone, sandstone, conglomerate and breccia.
