you have to create a common denominator, then subtraction. for example, to subtract (1/2) by (1/4), you'd have to multiply the top and bottom of the first fraction by 2 to match up your denominators. after that, you have (2/4) - (1/4), which you can subtract like normal thanks to the common denominator.
