The spiders were extremely angry, and started to chase him. While the spider was distracted, Bilbo went to save the dwarves.
The theme In the beginning, Bilbo felt like an outcast among the dwarves, doubting his worth at the beginning of the journey. After defeating the spiders and earning the respect of the dwarves he finally felt like he was able to make a difference in the journey. When the fight came, Bilbo displayed his selfless character and courage. This appears useful to him when he enters the lair of Smaug.
