Irony is a form of literary expression or a figure of rhetoric that consists in saying the opposite of what one wants to express. The irony also applies in situations, such as Crusoe's when leaving home in search of freedom, but end up being enslaved. Slavery is the opposite of freedom. If Robson thought he had no freedom in his parents' home, imagine what he thought of being enslaved!

This is an irony of fate.
