Explain what happens to the average kinetic energy, thermal energy, and temperature of a substance when the particles in the substance slow down.

Respuesta :

The particles in a substance slow down when the average kinetic energy of the particles decreases. As the average kinetic energy decreases, the internal energy decreases, and so the thermal energy decreases. As the thermal energy of the substance decreases, the temperature decreases.

The kinetic energy, thermal energy, and temperature of a substance DECREASE when the particles in the substance slow down.

What is kinetic energy?

Kinetic energy can be defined as energy in motion (movement), which is contrary to potential energy.

  • A material has kinetic energy when its constituent particles are in motion (i.e., they are in movement).

  • The kinetic energy increases the temperature of a given object and therefore thermal energy is a type of kinetic energy.

In conclusion, the kinetic energy, thermal energy, and temperature of a substance DECREASE when the particles in the substance slow down.
