A hypothesis based on Darwin's observations about the finches would be that the finches originated from the same ancestors, however, they adapted traits over time beneficial to their survival in different regions with different food sources. Also, since the finches with helpful traits (such as beak shape) survived when the ones that didn't have these traits didn't survive, Darwin came up with the idea of natural selection, also known as "survival of the fittest."
