The landed gentry, or simply known as the gentry, is a largely historical British social class consisting of landowners who could live entirely from rental income, or at least had a country estate.
Pride and Prejudice is an 1813 romantic novel by Jane Austen that deals with the emotional development of the protagonist Elizabeth Bennet, who learns the error of making hasty judgments and comes to appreciate the difference between the superficial and the essential. It depicts manners, education, marriage and money during the Regency era in Britain. In this novel, the Bennets are, like Jane Austen herself, members of an educated upper middle class known as the “gentry” or the “landed gentry.”
