Although some studies suggested the presence of water on Mars, the planet represents a hostile environment for human habitation. Scientists are currently researching ways to support potential human colonies on the Red Planet. Scientists have created closed ecosystem models that allow them to control factors such as moisture and temperature. In some of these closed ecosystems, plant growth experiments are being run using simulated Mars soil made of volcanic rocks from Earth.

Given this information, in three to five sentences, describe one (nonplant) organism that could contribute to an important ecosystem service for this system and describe one ecosystem service that you benefit from due to your local ecosystem that is probably not available on Mars.

Respuesta :

Bacteria and microorganisms in the soil could contribute to the supporting ecosystem service by providing nutrients to the soil. On the other hand, bees in the Earth ecosystem provide a regulating service but this might not be possible on Mars.

What is an ecosystem service?

This is defined as the type of benefit humans obtain from different elements in the ecosystem. There are four main types of ecosystem services:

  • Regulating
  • Supporting
  • Provisioning
  • Cultural

What is an example of an ecosystem service on Mars?

Considering in Mars conditions are quite rough, not all organisms might survive but one type of organism that could do it is bacteria.

Bacteria would provide the supporting service in soil because bacteria recycle soil nutrients to support the growth of plants, which is necessary if humans want to live on Mars.

What is an example of an ecosystem service on Earth?

One example of regulating service on Earth is bees. Indeed bees pollinate plants and this is necessary because it helps plants reproduce and thrive, which regulates the number of plants on Earth. Moreover, it is likely bees would not survive on Earth because they need more demanding conditions.
