The house was described as the 'most ramshackle of all their ramshackle homes'. This connotes a state of total disrepair. The author used simile by directly comparing the boards of the house to what a child constructed from cards.

Imagery was also used when the author painted a vivid picture of the house by calling it a "monument of decay". All these descriptions create the mental picture that Miss Lottie's house was really dilapidated.
