My country received its independence on a July after a hard fought fight against its colonial masters and we commemorate it annually with much fanfare in my area.
Even though the event was for a single day, my whole area was in a festive mood for the whole week with decorations such as balloons and the national flag adorning the streets.
When the day finally arrived, there was a parade of students, bands, churches and the several other groups across the main city square and then the mayor gave a speech to commemorate the event.
The festivities continued into the night where a fireworks display was organized. The night sky was illuminated by various colors as the fireworks marked yet another independence day celebration.
When we eventually retired for the night, I could tell that the whole town enjoyed themselves and were looking forward to the net celebration.
