I would say:
The Aztecs settled at a place where they saw an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its mouth. They took this as a sign from their god that they should settle there. They were apparently looking for a sign of an eagle and a serpent fighting on a cactus. As it was, they were known for their agriculture, land, art, and architecture.
