What do you think makes a particular action a crime?

Most people haven’t read all of the state and federal laws defining illegal acts. So as a member of society, how do you know what is against the law? Give examples of how you learned which acts are criminal and should be avoided.

Something I believe makes a certain thing a crime is considering whether it hurts others, or is morally wrong. People mostly rely on what their morals are to figure what is against the law.

I learned that jaywalking was considered illegal where I live as I saw someone get hit by a car, and the police couldn't do much considering they were jaywalking.
