The Electoral College was set up because trusted communication was so very difficult in the time of confederation.
Just counting the ballets was (and still is) a major problem. In the late 1700s it was doubly hard. It took time. The founding fathers decided on the Electoral College because the representatives from the states were chosen on the basis of population, and the representatives were obligated to vote the way the majority of the general public voted.
Now with communication so protected and so fast, the Electoral College is not really needed. Jefferson would be amazed at what modern technology can do.
