Helen Keller was born in the nineteenth century, a time where there were limited advantages to those with disabilities. Helen Keller utilized her struggle to inspire others and empower those with similar disadvantages. With perseverance and the help of her teacher dispatched from the Perkins Institute for the Blind named Miss Sullivan, Keller quickly learned techniques such as writing by hand, typing, and braille. She even went beyond to become fluent in French and German.
Fresh out of college, she wrote her first book, The Story of My Life, chronicling the struggles she had to overcome with communication and finding her own unique voice. Hellen Keller continued to reach farther by educating the public about blindness and disabilities. During WWII, Keller even advocated for soldiers who had been blinded during battle. She was a force to be reckoned with. Not letting her new found voice being silenced. Helen Keller teaches us not to let anything or anyone stand in the way of our goals or our education. That anything we set our mind to is achievable with perseverance and persistence. This is why she remains one of America’s greatest Heroes.
