Alexie suggests that the narrator has had difficulty coping with certain emotional experiences. This difficulty can be seen by the fact that the narrator believes that “words are too unpredictable” and “too limited.” The emphasis on unpredictability suggests the narrator has possibly felt the negative repercussions of someone else’s words. The evidence also suggests that he has not been able to express himself as well in writing as he can through drawing. The hopes he places in drawing as the “only real chance to escape the reservation” also indicates hardship. The use of the word escape shows that he wishes to move away from some circumstances that he perceives to be bad in his life and the world and move towards something better.
