is there something to choose or what? i think it's about the small number of alive fish that have the best genotype possible. only these that have best fitness will survive.

Adaptations to the environment could help the fish survive. They could have camouflage and other traits that have went through natural selection to be inherited. They might have also migrated to different waters where they are fewer predators or more food for them to reproduce although most of them will still get eaten.
