The study of these rocks is the main source for the understanding of the history of the earth which includes palaeo geography, pale climatology and the history of life.  

The study of the sedimentary rocks is known as sedimentology and it is known to be the part of both geology and physical geography and this study partly overlaps with the other disciplines of the Earth sciences. These rocks have also been found on Mars.
