The Black workers went on strike because their rights were not recognized. They were assigned the dirtiest part of the job such as loading garbage onto trucks while their white colleagues worked as drivers and supervisors. The strike was initiated when on February 1, 1968, Echol Chole and Robert Walker were crushed to death due to a faulty garbage truck
