You should include and refute counterclaims when writing an argument to acknowledge and answer criticisms of a thesis. It is essential that in an argumentative essay you build your thesis already in order to predict what the possible criticisms will be and already answer them through your text.

That way you can generate a more defined construction and more reflection on your argument.
