The new roof will have the same size horizontal wood beams running across the house. However, the height of the roof will be 9 feet instead of 5 feet. Please help me find the length of the diagonal wood beams.

Pythagoras theorem

The square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the square of the other two sides as shown:

c² = a² + b²

where;

  • a is the horizontal height = 9feet
  • b is 5 feet

Get the length of the diagonal wood beams.

c² = 9² + 5²

c² =81 + 25

c² = 106

c = 10.3 feet

Hence the length of the diagonal wood beams is 10.3 feet
