A plane takes about 4.5 hours to fly you 1800 miles from Chicago to Sacramento. At the same time, another plane flies from Sacramento to Chicago. This plane travels with the same average airspeed, but the flight to Chicago takes 3.75 hours. Find the average air-speed of the planes. Find the average wind-speed.

Relative speed

Since, the two planes travel with the same average airspeed; We can have the following equation;

  • x - y = 1800/4.5 = 400

  • x + y = 1800/3.75 = 480

By solving the two equations simultaneously;

  • x = average air speed of the planes = 440miles/hour

  • y = average wind speed = 40miles/hour
