Two ways in which these assemblies compared with the British House of Commons were:

  • They were elected by the people.
  • They usually included wealthy people.

Colonial Assemblies in the American Colonies

  • Were established to bring a measure of self-governance to the people.
  • Were full of wealthy land owners or the more well off in society.

This was the same with the House of Commons of the British Parliament as the Commons were also voted into power by the people and usually involved the well off in society.
