So in these equations time is the independent and distance is the dependent variables. When the slope does up, it showing that they are going farther from home, then as it gets closer to y=0 its them getting home. When the line is horizontal, it means that they are in the same spot. When it asks for speed or how fast it is likely, in this case asking mph.
a. is 12miles because at the 3 hour mark on the x axis, the y value or distance from the house is 12 miles (3,12)
b. Ali starting point is at x=0, so his distance is the y value relative to that point. which is 9 miles.
c. One thing I noticed about Ali’s grapgh was that the amount of time for each line on the x axis represented 1/2hr rathern than a full hour. So in this case, Ali was in one spot for 1/2 a hour.
d. For max, time is represented per hour for each line on the x axis. So Max was in the same spot for 4hrs
e. Speed is basically slope, and more specifically it is distance over time. use the appropriate cordinated and you get (3,12) and (7,12) which gives a slope of 0mph. If you ever get asked to find speed and slope is negative, the speed will be positive or the absolute value.
f. The y axis going up for max goes up by 2miles each line, and you get 9hours or (9hrs, 14miles)
g. as mentioned Ali’s time marks go by 1/2hrs. So between 4 and 5 hours he goes from 6 miles to 0 miles which means he got home. Nevertheless, the distance traveled is 6 miles
h. The total time is the ending x value which would be 5hrs.
