During the precolonial period, the three (3) main economies that existed in southern Africa in an ascending order include the following:

  1. Hunter-gathering: it was practiced by the precolonial San and it involved hunting for wild animals.
  2. Hunter-herding: it was practiced by the precolonial Khoekhoe and it involved both hunting for wild animals and pastoralism such as herding of goats, sheep, etc.
  3. Mixed farming: it was practiced by the Bantu speaking communities and it involved mining, hunting, crop cultivation (agriculture), trade and pastoralism.
