In World War 1, soldiers were terrified at the powers and nightmares of chemical weapons in trench warfare. Soldiers made the term "shell shock" themselves and it caused fatigue, confusion and nightmares. Some survivors would go on to have PTSD, or post traumatic stress disorder and have nightmares when they sleep at night. Shell shock is also known as PTSD.
