You would go to dangerous measures (ex. jumping off a building) to see someone. Putting your life on the line is basically betting your life through your actions usually to achieve a goal, and that goal in this case is to see someone. Of course if that person that they want to see is dead, then this is just a way of saying how much you miss them.
Also, home made doughnuts taste good.
