2: South Carolina was the first state to secede the Union. Lincoln viewed this as a threat to democracy.
3: Robert E. Lee was a confederate general who was very important to the Civil War because he commanded all of the Confederate armies and was extremely skilled.
4: Ulysses S. Grant was a Union general who was important because he led the Union Armies to victory over the Confederacy.
5: The assassination of Abraham Lincoln hurt reconstruction because Andrew Johnson took over and he was lenient towards slave states and against blacks gaining rights which halted progress and healing.
