Genghis Khan died in 1227 and his sons fought a bitter battle over who would succeed him as Khan.
The first to rule after Genghis Khan’s death was his son Ogedei.
Genghis Khan had chosen this son as his heir.
Ogedei ruled for twelve years.
During his reign, the Mongol Empire conquered most of the Middle East and parts of Russia. They also invaded Korea, Poland, the Balkans, and northern India.
Ogedei died in 1241 and there was a struggle for power that lasted nearly twenty years.
Kublai Khan became Khan.
He (Kublai Khan) was the son of Genghis Khan’s youngest son, Tolui.
He (kublai Khan) increased trade on the Silk Road more than ever before
His main territory was in the Great Khanate where he built the Yuan Dynasty.
In 1271, Kublai Khan declared himself emperor of all of China.
Five years later, he captured the capital of the Song Dynasty, Hangzhou.
By 1279, the Mongols controlled all of China. The people moved their capital to Beijing.
