The Cold War era was marked by the rivalry between the US and the Soviet Union, the time of tension was pushed on because of the fact that the two countries never actually went to war. When else would this term apply in US history if at all? What might have happened if there would have been a "hot" war with the Soviet Union.

If a hot war did breakout between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, then there probably would have been a third world war. This is because the U.S. had all of it's N.A.T.O. allies ready to go to war, and the Soviet Union had it's allies from the Warsaw Pact.
