The presidential election of 2000 is an example of how a candidate can receive the greatest share of the popular vote, but lose the election to an opponent. Use the above map to explain why George W. Bush (shown in yellow) won this election, instead of Al Gore (shown in blue).

George W. Bush won the 2000 election because of the electoral college. The electoral college is based off of a point system. Each state gets its own points based on population. I can’t see the map, but my guess is that it’s showing the electoral points in each state. Bush won because the states that he received the most votes in had enough points to get to 270.
