The effect was that  she was very afraid anytime every time she is with or around the missionaries.

The Indian girl  do not kindly see anyone from Caucasian race as a result of of all the land stealing.

Note that in the passage,  Zitkala-sa tells that the missionaries' appearance is shown as "a cold race whose hearts were known to be filled with prejudice".

And this tells that she was very afraid anytime every time she is with or around the missionaries.
