The nations associated with or affected by the Soviet Union were located on the eastern side of the Iron Curtain, while NATO members or officially neutral nations were located on the western side. On either side of the Iron Curtain, distinct international economic and military alliances were formed. Later, it was used to refer to the 4,300-mile (7,300 km) physical barrier made up of fences, walls, minefields, and watchtowers that separated "east" and "west." This physical barrier included the Berlin Wall as well.
