When repairing a small hole on a metal stressed skin, the major consideration in the design of the patch should be the sheer energy of the riveted joint.

What is sheer energy?

The sheer energy of the riveted joints must be barely much less than the bearing energy of the pores and skin. If a failure must occur, it is going to be a shear failure of the rivets, instead of a bearing failure of the pores and skin.

When repairing a small hollow in metallic careworn pores and skin, the rivets must take all of the pressure from the pores and skin and convey it into the patch. On the other aspect of the damage, this pressure is carried lower back into the pores and skin.
