The Candy That Is Not Sweet

This excerpt is from the book Mrs. Spring Fragrance written
by Sui Sin Far. Far was born in England in 1855 to an English
father and a Chinese mother. As an author. Far sought to
share her Chinese identity and culture with and in a world
that was all too quick to insist that immigrants assimilate into
their new surroundings and leave their own culture behind.
This particular story appears in the second half of the book
titled "Tales for Chinese Children and presents the reader
with the tale of a young boy living in a Chinese village who is
supposed to be watching his sleeping grandfather and baby
brother and is tempted by a passing candy seller. His
subsequent actions teach him an important lesson about
honesty.
