An important day in the life of a young Latina woman is her quinceañera, or fifteenth birthday. The day is different from other birthdays because it is a celebration to commemorate her womanhood with both religious and festive traditions. The celebration is different depending on the family's country of origin, but it generally has a combination of a Catholic Mass and a large party. The young woman has a formal gown, most often white, and has a court of boys and girls. Wealthy families may have the party at a luxurious hotel or country club, whereas families with lower incomes may celebrate at home. Family members, especially godparents, may give money to cover some of the costs or sponsor specific gifts and garments. The balance of religious and social traditions often depends on the individual family and the girl's own wishes.
