An isotope is one of two or more forms of the same chemical element. Different isotopes of an element have the same number of protons in the nucleus, giving them the same atomic number, but a different number of neutrons giving each elemental isotope a different atomic weight.

Primarily there exists a total of three subatomic particles. Protons, neutrons and electrons. Protons and neutrons are inside the nucleus and much heavier than electrons. The atomic number of each element represents the number of protons of an atom of that element.

Reason :

Atoms that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons are called isotopes.

The number of existing protons and electrons in a neutral atom of an element is equal. But, the atoms of an element may have a different number of neutrons. Since neutrons do not participate in an atom's chemical reactions, the chemical properties of all these different atoms of an element are the same.
