Explain how neurons produce and transmit information, noting: Na , K , resting potential, and action potential. chegg

Respuesta :

Neurons produce and transmit information by sending and receiving signals. These signals are possible since each neuron has a charged cellular membrane (a voltage difference between the inside and the outside).

Neurons have a negative concentration gradient most of the time, indicating that there are more positively charged ions outside than inside the cell. This regular condition of a negative concentration gradient is called resting membrane potential. During the resting membrane potential there are:-

  • more sodium ions (Na+)outside than inside the neuron
  • more potassium ions (K+) inside than outside the neuron

Conduction of a signal within a neuron i.e. from dendrite to axon terminal is carried by a transient reversal of the resting membrane potential, which is termed as an action potential.
