Modeling, which allows artists to simulate three-dimensional forms in painted figures, is the use of light and dark pigment tones.

Objects are visually defined through their use of light and dark tones. The objects around you are three-dimensional because you can go up to them, view them from all angles, and touch them. Look around you for any identifiable items for a time.

Try to understand  why you perceive their true three-dimensional appearances. Look at the various values that the light and shadows produce.

Values are the various gray tones that exist between white and black. Values are used by artists to transform the light and dark shades they observe into shading, giving the appearance of a third dimension.
