According to Lawrence Kohlberg, people's responses to moral dilemma scenarios reveal the stage of Moral development they have attained-as well as yielding information about their general level of Cognitive development.
Kohlberg opined that moral development happens in all human beings through six stages. How different individuals react in certain scenarios of moral dilemma reveal the stage of moral development that also gives us insight into the person's cognitive development.
Kohlberg essentially classifies moral development into three broad categories that are further split to two stages. He also suggested that people move through these stages in a fixed order.
According to Kohlberg, the three levels of moral reasoning are preconventional, conventional and post conventional. Individuals progress from each level to another, by moving through the fixed stages of moral development.
