One of the fastest-growing ethnic groups in the country is Mexican Americans, and some research suggests that the process of acculturation may be linked to various mental health issues within this group. In this study, a small community sample of Mexican Americans was chosen to get quantitative data on acculturation stress and its correlation with mental health conditions.

What is the result of this study?

In this group of Mexican American young adults, there were no correlations between measures of cultural identity and lifetime diagnoses of drug or alcohol dependency, major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, antisocial personality disorder, or conduct disorder. But higher levels of acculturation stress were linked to lifetime diagnoses of alcoholism, drug addiction, and anxiety disorders.

What is the conclusion of this study?

In this particular group of Mexican American young adults, quantitative measures of acculturation stress were found to be strongly related to substance dependency and anxiety disorders, but not cultural identification per se. For this high-risk demographic, these statistics may be useful in creating preventative and intervention strategies.
